Commercial Aviation in the Gulf

Commercial aviation in the Gulf region is navigating a volatile landscape marked by soaring fuel prices and airspace disruptions stemming from the US-Israel-Iran conflict. Gulf carriers have faced significant capacity challenges, but are adapting their networks to maintain premium services while absorbing historically high jet fuel costs.

The Persian Gulf region faces severe airspace risks, with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) maintaining operational risk warnings for the area. Bahrain and Kuwait have experienced fully closed airspaces at various points, while Qatar and the UAE have resumed limited operations.

Airlines like Gulf Air have operated restricted rescue flights and repositioned fleets to accessible hubs in Saudi Arabia to circumvent closures.

The heavy reliance on Middle Eastern transit corridors has significantly impacted global available seat kilometers (ASKs), with regional flight capacity declining severely year-over-year.

Jet fuel prices have skyrocketed, with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) projecting jet fuel to average $152 per barrel, squeezing regional profit margins.

Forecasts project a net loss of approximately $4.3 billion for Middle Eastern carriers, a stark revision driven by the combination of fuel price shocks and flight suspensions.

Private and corporate aviation continues to see strong momentum, with fleet management companies like Gulf Wings expanding their long-haul portfolios.

The booming Gulf aviation market directly propels the Bahrain International Airshow, expanding its 2026 edition Bahrain International Airshow secures 10 exhibitors for 2026. Driven by the region’s massive fleet expansions, rising passenger traffic, and strategic visions, BIAS is pivoting to showcase future-forward technology like Urban Air Mobility (UAM), Artificial Intelligence, and sustainable aviation.

The rapid trajectory of commercial aviation in the GCC specifically dictates several key features of the 8th Bahrain International Airshow 2026, November 18–20, 2026 event at Sakhir Airbase.

With regional airlines modernizing and pushing for environmental sustainability under visions like Bahrain Economic Vision 2030, BIAS 2026 is highlighting green technologies, AI, air taxis, and a new Ground Services Equipment (GSE) Expo.

While the Middle East remains a leader in aviation profitability, regional airspace restrictions and fluctuating oil prices are inflating operational costs. This has redirected industry conversations at BIAS 2026 toward fuel efficiency and war-risk management.Shift to Higher-Yield Fleets: Demand is focusing more on long-range, wide-body aircraft (like Airbus A350s and Boeing 777Xs) and premium ancillary services rather than low-cost volume.Bahrain’s National Aviation Strategy: The Kingdom’s strategy (aiming to expand destinations from 66 to 100 by 2030) underscores BIAS 2026’s position as a launchpad for regional infrastructure partnerships. A debut Ground Services Equipment (GSE) Expo and dedicated conferences on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) reflect the Gulf’s push for “green” aviation infrastructure. The show features four core themes: Airlines & Airports, Space, Defense, and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.

His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain, issued Edict (21) of 2026 amending Article (II) of Edict (61) of 2009 establishing and forming the Supreme Organising Committee of the Bahrain International Airshow.
